The Role of the Project in CMS

CMS Event Rates and Data Sizes

Event input rate from event store 102 HZ

Data input rate from event store 100 MB/s

CPU capacity required to reconstruct one event 2 X 104 MIPS-s

Reconstructed data per event 0.1 MB

Reconstructed data output rate to event store 10 MB/s

    Raw data 1 PB/year

Raw and reconstructed data few PB/year

CPU capacity required for physics analysis ~8 X 106 MIPS

Total CPU capacity for reconstruction and analysis ~107 MIPS

Total LHC data after ~5 years ~50 PB

  • The Project is not meant to be specific to one experiment: it’s goals are generic to ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHC-B

  • However, there is strong focus on the immediate needs of CMS in the areas of:

    • The work areas described in the CMS Computing Technical Proposal
    • The H2 Test Beam OO prototype
    • WAN connectivity
  • Caltech is a CMS collaborating institute and is the host institute for the project

  • The SPP Exemplar 2000 is installed at Caltech’s Centre for Advanced Computing Research (CACR)
